Not all the stores were open when
I shopped in Nippori on Monday…so remember that when you shop here. Sunday not
opened at all. Oh and remember to bring CASH. No credit cards in these small stores. I jumped on the Yamamoto Line from
Shibuya(head towards Shinjuku) getting off in Nippori (not Nishi-Nippori). Go out the south exit and you will see
a sign for Nippori – Fabric town.
Follow signs at bottom of stairs and marks on the sidewalk. Remember to take the stairs next to the
fire station to go back to the same gate to train. There is a paper map in English if you find one on
street or in a store. They are
promoting the stores and give a good description of what each store has on the
back side of map. Some of my
favorite stores are: Mihama cloth on the corner(43 on map) He has prepackaged goods. Some traditional Japanese designs and
some children prints I love. Also
he sales Echino prints for 6.30 a yard.
This stuff in the states is expensive…so I look through the and see if I
see something I can’t get at home.
Each visit is a bit different.
This time I found the cutest Pink youth print and one with
monsters. He has 1 meter packs and
2 meter packs. Just fun and easy
to buy. Tomatoe is a good store
but can be expensive. Look in the
sale racks. One of my favorites is
Yasuda Shouten(69) and Humongous. They are next to each other. Yasuda has cottons and linens in
natural colors and indigos. So
many to choose from. Not cheap but
really nice stuff. Humongous has
Indian cottons and beads that match the colors. She is a nice gal and can speak a bit of English. Love her colors. It is just fun to walk
down the street and look at the bins outside the stores. There are usually remnants and sale
racks out there. Again kind of
close quarters in some stores. The
thing that caught my eye this trip were the leathers for 1500 yen($15.00). Small hides but lots of colors. Soft and thin hides(wonder what animal
they are?!) Can be put on garments
or bags. Lots of Elegance
knits. Expensive but fun. Fabric is not necessarily cheap in
Japan but when you find a piece you gotta have it is worth it. I really try to look for the print and
textures I can’t find at home. You
can find some Kimono shops and fabrics as well. I have other spots I like to find these so I did not go in
and look, but if you want one made that is the place to look. http://tokyofashion.com/nippori-fabric-town-pictures-video. This is a good site for pictures and
video of Nippori.

I was in Hong Kong last week for work and asked a co worker
to take us to the area for sewing notions, trims and fabrics. She first took us to a place called Yen Chow
Street Hawker Bazaar. Imagine a homeless
tent city in a large square block. This was
the most interesting shopping experience I have ever had! Low hanging ceiling
of tarps, corrugated fiberglass and wood.
Linoleum paved narrow aisles with stacks of fabrics on both sides. Small
swatches tagged to end of bolts to show the fabric.

The lighting was so dark at some points I couldn’t
see the color of the fabrics. The prices
were decent but the selection was not what I was craving. With the way things looked I would be afraid
to buy some wool in fear it had been wet at some point and probably stacked
there for years. I found some black lace
and some iridescent fabric for cheap.

Next we walked down to Yu Chau Street that every shop was trims, ribbons
or beads. Each store a bit different, every
color of twill tape, cording or ribbon I could want. We found Leather toggles, plastic buckles and
sequin. We found a fabric shop on Ki
Lung Street but I got claustrophobic with the narrow aisles and the blaring
radio talk show that was abrasive to my ears.
They had a lot of linings and left over production run fabrics. The woman told us there was another store
down around the corner on Shek Kip Mei Street.
This was exactly what we were looking for. Laura found some silk for $10 yd for her
niece’s wedding dress and I found two pieces of linen for $6-7 a yard. One striped from Italy 56” wide and the other
a light pink Irish linen 48”. He had
lots of men’s shirting fabrics and some wool.
Again my larger back side was not feeling the love in this store as
every time I turned around I knocked over rolls of fabric just stacked on end. I was also with a group not really shopping
so I couldn’t spend my precious time to look through everything….so I took his
card and will go back. Wa Fat Piece Goods Co. Shek Kip Mei Street

After telling another coworker about our adventure she
wanted to go back Friday afternoon once we were done with work. She is a subway taker and got directions how
to get there from our hotel on Nathan road.
We took the train from Tsim Sha-Tsun heading toward Jordan and Sham Shui
Po. I believe it was 3-4 stops (it will
say in English on the train monitor Sham
Shui Po). When you get off the train walk to Exit A…that is really
important. When you come up from subway
turn left. This will point you toward Yu
Chau Street. There are lots of street
vendors to distract so enjoy your way town to the street. Once you are in the area you will start to see
the trim stores. Sorry I don’t have more
on fabrics….next trip.

Yes you should and I should go also to be your consultant! We have had this weekend planned for months and were so excited when it finally came. I have been fortunate to have gone the last time it was in town so I knew what to expect...the size, being overwhelmed, loving every second.
Allison drove down from Bellingham WA on friday morning. We hit the show for a few hours on friday afternoon. We were both overwhelmed with the beautiful fabrics, colors, ideas and creative atmosphere. We gladly accepted any thing people were handing out. Later that night we went through the show catalog and marked the booths we wanted to go look at. She had an appointment with her sales rep Saturday afternoon. We won two stacks of Kaffe 2 1/2" squares. Love it!
One gal Allison wanted to meet was Heather Bailey.
I snapped this picture of the two. Heather has wonderful patterns and fabrics. Check out he giant bluebird embroidered on burlap behind them in her booth...it was very cool. Check out her website.
I spotted one of my favorite quilt designers, Jane Sassaman. I had taken a class from her at ArtQuilt Tahoe many years back. She is such a nice gal.
Needless to say Allison & I were worn out and buzzing with ideas all weekend. I was very sad when she left to go home sunday afternoon. We have had to go back to our routines...but excited to get back together to play in the studio hopefully soon. We have more ideas we have time for! Love you kiddo! No this is not me....but this woman's satin stitched emboirdered shirt inspired me as teen.........I have been thinking about this blog post for a
while…actually over a year now. It
is about going back to my ”roots” for creative inspiration. I think about "What is my look"? "Where do I get my ideas..?" "What draws me to certian styles?"
I was a teen in the 1970’s. I had a mother that taught me how to
sew really well and a couple older sisters that were pretty crafty with a
needle. My oldest sister was a flight
attendant for United and crossed over the continent hoping another high-jacker
would not get on the plane again….she passed her time on layovers with embroidery. The surface was usually a denim
shirt. After living on the east
coast for many years, she had met a man that exposed her to the San Francisco
Bay Area, where we were from, in a very different way then she had experienced
when she was a teen in the 60’s. The
Bay area in the 70’s was about music, art and politics.
The non-working drugged out
hippies moved on and the thirty something’s that were still there and
liked the organic or hip way of life realized they still needed jobs and ways
to support their families. They
still drank and partied but they had to make a living. Anyway what I saw come out of this was
some pretty incredibly creative people doing their art and crafts, starting
businesses, becoming graphic artists, publishing books, designing and making a
big impression on me. My closest
friends were graphics artists starting to work for small electronic companies
with fruit as a logo, doing posters for local radio stations and starting
skateboard and art magazines.

I was listening to Ridgetop by Jesse Collin Young this
morning and it brought back memories of hanging out in San Francisco at my
sisters apartment a block from Haight street. We would be sewing or embroidering things to wear or put on
our backpacks.

I embroidered this
patch that went on an old green surplus knap sack I carried in high
school. My sister had turned me on

I loved to sew and knew I wanted to be
a clothing designer, photographer or artisan. I continued to make things over the years. Here is a yoke of a top I made in the
80’s , I never made the shirt but can’t part with the work. I only have a few things left…these two
things are a few survivors. I hate
I have rid myself of some of my handy work…. denim skirts, vests, bags, leather
patch suitcase. I am sure I can
dig up old pictures of myself, but I was usually behind the camera.
I bought this cool book at the quilt show a few weeks back
by Sue Spargo I loved the look of her work…reminded
me of what we loved back then. A little Bohemian. As I looked through the
book it was all the same stitches I have in two other little stitch books my
sister had given me back then for reference that I still have…but I like Sues
colors and ways she used the velvets in layers. So it will go into my library with all my other little
stitch books I have collected. As
I collect reference books over the years, I have found some books I would have just
died for as a teen. I loved
anything that had design references.

Which brings me back to searching for my look, my artist way. I keep thinking I have to have a look,
something that is mine. I am a
very good crafts person, I can swing a needle and thread or put together a garment with
the best of them, but I never felt I had a specific look…too many ideas and too
many directions. I am working on
narrowing this down I think……go back to my “roots” the look I love and still gravitate to now….that look of the
70’s beautiful embroidery, patch work, denim, tapestry. I came from a great area of the
country, in a time when music and art were flourishing and I was around it, it
influenced me to go into the clothing industry. I just need to re-ground myself to what my dreams were. Now I have the money, studio, stash of
fabric, beads, floss, books, tools and knowledge. I have learned so much in the past 30 years except how to trust my ideas and design skills. I will continue to sew my way through the studio and make up my ideas inspired and updated from the 70's that influenced me.

I have this wonderful 4" x 4 pie pan from Chicago Metallic. I love the size. We can either split one or eat a whole one!
Found a cute little book too, "The Magic of Mini Pies". I love the recipes as it is for a small pie maker machine or something like this 4" pie pan. I like her dough recipes. Very easy. I will work on perfecting the dough so it is flaky. Want to make some savory pies ...little Chicken Pot Pies! I had to make some cinnamon walnut spirals with the left over dough...yummy! I used to make these as a kid.
Another cute pie book is "Handheld Pies" some fun stuff in there as well.

This year we decided to add production of our garments to some factories in southern India. It was decided that we should go visit our counterparts that we talk via email everyday and see the factories they would like us to use for future production. So on January 2nd, four of us from the office set out on a very long journey...Portland, Seattle, Paris, Bangalore...a good 25 hours of travel. We arrived late at night and drove 45 minutes to the Hotel Ista<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjncnjoFoJo5e5_RU6aWh20r0F306z4w9Fxm3-x0EIqrHuYMD9kvTrgVMOx74ahzfvhYTwMMjoBGg0LQSanHRb0Z4Mh864i4Oc6fv3ckLNDopRiMVSmDwS4NtRvIvGqLsCSZEeJGgMrWl8/s400/Copy+of+DSCF8677.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5696778923826252962" />
I was totally planning to blog when I first got to Hong Kong but got so busy with work and got a nasty cold that I barely got my emails answered. I am writing this now that I am back. The driving in India was crazy and we laughed how they fill every space on the road with cars, motorcycles, tuktuks and trucks. I had lots of car time to look at the stencils on the trucks and how they decorated their vehicles. Women rode side saddle on motorcycles, holding babies, or bags or groceries. They looked so comfortable as their drivers whipped through traffic and narrow spaces. We saw one group with four small adults on a motorcycle!
The first part of our trip was to Bangalore India. This is Hotel Ista where we stayed near our first visit at the office. The pool and restaurant area was so calming.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZLD-GCxQVT-hI1-MPDuj9PUZ9GlShVl-nqlHLyan0CNPISiYoTHkRbIcXtmAAk_R2ZYwuo7EIyU-IsfJtC3IKqEksmz547t7gp3YyCFvJhR5nTJe_fLfrIem3ohzSP71X4vBOHniyv-k/s400/Copy+of+DSCF8673.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5696778924532309874" />
We were in Bangalore for a day and then flew to Tirpur in the am and drove to a factory, took a tour, had lunch and then drove back to airport to fly to Chennai. The first factory is a knit factory that does knitting, silk screening and embellishing. I can tell you that there is a good bet that you have a tee shirt in your closet or drawer that was made in this facility. It was wonderful to see thier capcity and skills. Here are some pictures of the workers sewing sequin on tops. The workers are brought from the north as this is a specialized skill they told me.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8opTKW32MuYA6rGGFZqXfbDWYTo_6TJWIBIq6lyhaEd89dlGdjL2E9ouJgpJWGkHaFyZdkAuxVAvtA55hQPS6dIPvS8ZdqRkMzQ1fwX87CLdyF2FsT2Kuy2eE21sD94_2LE2RyscrA60/s400/sequin2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5704024622460953986" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOvrJ_9B95Bjs-WG9wV_PRW7cWQpjo122N_Udj11629BoP1AjudbYumroDYAjqo30VviHTytvzxkBXj1MNo9OoaD5ADA62WZPM3VaqmMoOCZvTnQ27pAcBcHviR8dwyjm4smDg__wQFPc/s400/sequin1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5704024624337284674" />
The women wear the most beautiful wrapped sari's. The colors were bright and clean so amongst the background of the red earth and dirt streets , these beautiful women would stand out. It is a good example of the bright colors.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiuxzFuOmpwzFpIOMPTDzQkvH706Ik69RszeWw1N5iSfpSqFJxHjB7-g4xDxc1qBDYsc3jPyXUrQDTexWDDXy4JYgPlW1TUV_qbDZyaSBykh_P_2VIpGobne9pHwXoN2bKuHV1osrGEtg/s400/sari1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5704025155737148098" />
Not to bore you with details, we visited three factories in three days and ate very well, each showing us local cuisine that they favor. We went to the Shish-kabob Factory on the last lunch and the food just kept coming. I was so full! We had about 2 hours to shop before our last dinner, so our hostesses Suman and Saritha took us to a small mall where we bought some cotton scarves, then to a sari shop named Silkworm, that had the most beautiful silk and cotton fabrics for sari's and tunic tops. I bought a beautiful pink silk embroidered piece that I can make a top out of...they offer a service to make it up but I was leaving the next day and would not have time. I am excited to design a summer top with this.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPrTjqeSCs4DpITCyw03hNVmqAxdvMKpCBaYyHcjrr4T1l30vuoYelGvPCc4vL6pRo0f6CVb8vumSV8xFs526hBSYe9WpAKuksKU1hTG5z7BnasovFDLdEZvlizIYuldtnN7Dy1AfuiSU/s400/sari+1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5704027939520165778" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZUe6ffpeduYpMrkwaB4IxEV2sVnSFfhBH1Tkurih7DfTl7XpyP7iUJD4OamH2oGnWtqIex5tQrA1o2TatS_I76CYC6pNHJ611twYloBp0TzdmqgxEhI2O0PTQcW0_ySda45yT1K6lUzE/s400/sari4.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5704027935014942034" />
The other piece I could not pass up and believe me I wanted to buy more..was this organic cotton hand woven Sari. I am not much for New Years Celebrations, we usually have a nice dinner, watch a movie and head to bed. This year our daughter is a teenager and we want to make sure she is safe and sound so we offered our house as a place she and a couple close friends can come and hang out to play games and watch movies. My husband and I will hide out in my basement studio and watch movies on my computer. Sounds boring I know but it is worth it to know my 16 year old is safe.
This was a good year..Year of the rabbit. It was pretty mellow considering how awful 2010 was for me...Year of the Tiger. This next year is year of the Dragon. I hope it is another good prosperous year for us.
I will literally begin the new year traveling the world. I leave on jan 2 for India. I will be there on business to visit factories making our clothing. It will be a quick trip, traveling with my boss and his boss. I am sure I will not get any shopping in, but it will be my first time in this part of the world. I will take pictures of what I can to share. Once I am in Hong Kong I will write more. I will travel to Tokyo as well...so stay tuned. My goal is to blog my way along this trip. I don't make New Years resolutions...but goals. and my goal is to blog about this trip to share with my family and friends who care to read about it.
Goals for 2012:
Continue to sew my way through the studio.
Be able to make a smaller dress size and shop the Athleta and Title 9 Catalogs!
Have more Art play days in the studio.
Be more patient at home.
See my sisters and old friends I have not seen in a long time.
Completely finish my quilts. machine Quilting and all.
Participate in the PAC show December 2012 with a bunch of new stuff.
Get out and take more pictures with the digital SLR.
Think of a happy thought everyday to keep me going.
Don't let my daily job get me down and dry me up. Do the best I can but not let it consume me.
Make a piece of jewelry for every new outfit I make.

Ok that is good to start with. I will be adding more on my trip notes. So until Hong Kong and Japan!.Darlene Veltman Design Studiohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06117319896939739196noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2021667887220306882.post-66624914009136991192011-11-12T10:13:00.000-08:002011-11-12T10:33:40.633-08:00Day of the Dead Mask<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDJzJ1O3jvbbinN-Ty8wzMg4iRCt4Ak-SF0F5V5H9Uo-n_iDVpwtcdmW5Osq7DWJmT0V8RjIehkdwQ_2pdjCX_jBTguHhymIje3UUJFnHpgnzE-qSus1GuEjFNVO6bEPj0ThX99XVgWeI/s400/dayofdead.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5674175834520911650" />
My daughter's Spanish teacher gave them extra credit if they colored a paper mask or made a puppet or dressed up for Halloween. Well when my daughter Cora tells me about projects like this...I have to ramp them up!!! Cora wanted to make a mask but with fabric or a store bought one knowing I would jump at the chance to go to the art or fabric store. After our brain storming discussion we came up with a canvas mask that she spent the weekend painting. I think it came out very well. Cora also made some paper flowers a-la Frieda and we pinned them in her hair. The teacher was impressed but wanted the mask to keep. Cora said she wanted it for her portfolio and didn't want to give it to the teacher so she only got half the bonus points! It was a good collaboration with what we had at home in the studio. Save my trip to the art store for another project...Christmas is coming!Darlene Veltman Design Studiohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06117319896939739196noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2021667887220306882.post-11025290817029403042011-08-06T15:31:00.000-07:002011-08-06T15:42:42.555-07:00Remnant Stash<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 283px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOavXLp_uxZu2CcxnjbRMz3v3nQ3MZknLJIAVQqkfwiVrT8JRVmxOCYbe2inq8fWJoQgdndTF0LMlyGWfLb4NBO4WTedZdMR4IaE0CkXkQmTvYyvWuTujycmKA5RYjTUuBjRlqkeZVN0Q/s400/pink+cloth.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5637876191520066370" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 269px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmePcDdCll0LtYElBZ4DjuioMtZJNYQwIyttlzuDJ84nyiS0tWuTeq38M9X8FezxrRgSZU2qowpk4H3GT6Xh9Sn423btgy-sdbldcgXa3Bno_4A9r-fqOOTvH7edlr_-2b4fvGRx2wu_o/s400/bluecloth.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5637876186050469010" />
I am a self proclaimed "Remnant Whore" I scout out the remnants at most fabric stores but non better than my beloved Fabric Depot. We were so excited because it was hosted by Seth Aaron Henderson, winner of season 7! The girls gussied up and Dad put on a clean shirt and we headed down town on the beautiful summer evening. The stage was the bing Lounge. This small venue is used for radio concerts and small showings. There was quite the crowd so we squeezed in amongst the Portland Fashionistas. By the end of the evening Stephen and Seth were buds and the girls won lots of swag. I love Valentines day..my birthday is in February..so I made a few of them and gave them away. But alas I bought too much fabric and still have a large stash of Reds and Pinks. So I drag them out every so often and make something. I made a nice Log cabin last year to try out my Log Cabin tool...a later blog. But the other morning I woke up with an idea of a collage piece then cut up into hearts to make some cards out of. I am trying to start early for the PAC show in December! So here is my process:
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTHNbO9Suw7PZ4DUAb3QaIrUZ0dHqfsJmXwl_DnQLIA-cgmUOKXbvYbiNjvehdUoVT7pvTdmxUZX8LpndCR9JUh4azARp8CZJQwFuMnEImWnR3g8-TNEKa8Y0rW_RBJKn0Fpnt66oU9J8/s400/DSCF7932.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5597617230589033890" />
I cut a red piece as the base fabric..if any background shows through or raw edges at least it will be red and not muslin.
Then I cut random pieces and laid them over each other. I put variegated or red thread in the sewing machine and machine quilted over the peices. I just randomly stitched to make sure the edges were sewn down and it was pretty solid in the stitching.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTodhFjQ4zF2W_9L5geBW4r0KL35DxPgTxUf2TUaqUGxZQP2F5EOcNaRHM2hvuctCJJmEO8FW8Zl1WdoFqT3l_TwWXLV8piTi3PD50D6V0DB5Gt-llgECsSE0jcTCfP-P0waFMTbqCza4/s400/DSCF7933.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5597617235983906642" /><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrTePfqMY3DxgzquoFVPsG-zmk2A3OIOzBDyRpmiQyIk8qCczEYcBLc9VWCFjwbQZzafu49po-r0wdFbUP9BO90wUdflEXIeIUR8eJBzwXWQTQ8wjCp1rN-G6R29mkWWczKY4Woq36bBI/s400/DSCF7928.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5597617230737632498" />I made a heart template to fit on a A6 card size. ( I have lots of red envelopes left from Christmas...using the fat of the land so to speak). I cut with scalloped scissors, wavy scissors and straight edge for variety. Then made a small bow from strips and a small shell button. I think they came out really cute and can't stop making them! I love Clover, lots of great sewing tools. This Little yo yo maker was the coolest tool I had seen in a while and thought it was another great way to use up my scraps. So I bought two sizes, large which finishes at 1 3/4", and a small which finishes at 1". The gal also demoed an oval shape which I bought as well. When I got home I dug out some scraps and started making some while I watched TV. I had a little baggy full before I new it. While I was making them I thought of some different ways to use them, one is to make a little black tunic and sew them on the front and back. Now this picture is of them on top of a little tunic top I have so the finished project is not done but wanted to show my idea. I think it would be nice done with yo yo's in neutral colors as well with a nice linen tunic. I went and bought an extra small template as well to fill in the small gaps. The yo yo's can be flipped with the smooth, non gathered side up as well. I thought it might be cool to put both sides up. I think I will get out my batiks and do one in all batiks with a nice black rayon tunic. Also what about a small bolero vest to wear over my solid color tunics tops with a t-shirt. My ideas come faster than I can make them.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicJlKF3w_4F0SJ0Dl465H9yZJpPqYc9dZNZiaXQRGCgGOYA7NFtKXuSziBbz4ma9SOjSLj4d7Mjfi-7zj-02sK9HRZuF5w6UNLhYb6_4h9FtDjGb10kjTNLbTAKFof5jLvCHRUKhR4ZaQ/s320/yoyo1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5594112957084153730" />Darlene Veltman Design Studiohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06117319896939739196noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2021667887220306882.post-45040775839012098902011-03-23T08:07:00.000-07:002011-03-23T08:31:02.081-07:00Scraps 101: Kaleidoscope Template<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgguuqywY8BRpXdwqmeMmcKkkFvPzgv3VGi_uRPzHBk0ZizuHW4nohclJxLVMkpMld_PE0yKx7yItClJcsy9G1a9FGfw8Xb61bcaNHShUQGVJEwkpMOQ87cytuxX-eGMbW-eidYqR0X4UU/s320/kalidiscope+rule.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5587295502630679394" />
I like templates and rulers for quilt making. I have always liked the Kaleidoscope block and found this ruler by Marti Michell. Last summer while cleaning out fat quarters and scraps I decided to start cutting scrap prints with this ruler. Before I knew it I had quite a few cut out and ready. Now for the back ground fabric. I put the project aside but recently found a nice light batik that I think will look nice. I cut a bunch of triangles and now have enough to start this scrap quilt. Here is the block lay out. When you do the opposite lay out of dark where the light is the overall quilt will take on movement. <img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhi1FdH1nC62YHX30ok8gxMr9fDiFtzOd45K6Nhej6buI8aPpNViOYlWFh03EPFTibaPHC52oF6kuVLtchXbKpCT36bhQdtZZzEZ2Av_LbAOUJHqZFocAZ8j3At4NfPb8BXI_TLBj1oKIs/s320/kalidiscope+block.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5587295611228668386" />
For my favorite new book just out..check out Material Obsession 2 by Kathy Doughty and Sarah Fielke. They have used Marti Michell templates for traditional quilt blocks but with a fun new spin on fabrics and lay outs. It inspired me for more scrap quilts. Their use of color combinations and patterned backgrounds is wonderful. When you look at traditional quilt blocks and only see old boring fabrics and colors...you will be able to look beyond all that with this book. I love it for this. New ways to use up that scrap fab I have!
I am working on the "by product quilt" and making progress...I will post pictures soon. but I am really close with my jeans pattern and need them more then the quilt so that is priority in the studio this week.Darlene Veltman Design Studiohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06117319896939739196noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2021667887220306882.post-24726115252547096852011-03-07T20:59:00.000-08:002011-03-07T21:27:27.036-08:00<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 308px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiy34vFOShWmcwyWPeIRI9AoBtFFEdMKCTPZplXk65XRARZV5tXEUjMGMvvHv2QOAwzYAg0dbqo-n5sgkBUCco5OynbmaoqoI2atJh8ULxWn88Wwz3xzRibFN712VCLHwjB-JEnqaVCiGg/s400/quilt+block.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5581573129559666178" />
Well I guess I am not very good at this blogging thing. Too much happened the last 8 months...not bad things, just things that distracted me from being very creative or wanting to write about them. I am still sewing my way through the studio. Just not as fast as I wanted to. I am making pants trying to get a jean pattern perfected. It slows down the creative process. I still put my ideas in my sketch book so I feel I am still being creative. The sketches are patiently waiting for me to come back and make them 3 dimensional.
This past weekend I went to the beach with my quilting girlfriends and we spent the time sitting at a big table sewing. It was fabulous to just not think of work or needing to take care of the family...just two full days of sewing. Here is one of 18 blocks I made. I have been collecting the fabric for a year now so I thought it was time to get going, so a large log cabin quilt is in the process. I will post the finished piece once sewn together.

My other thoughts the past month have been on RE-USE and USE IT UP. I have scraps, old fabrics, left overs, bi-products, what ever you want to call them I have too much but can't bare parting with them. With the price of cotton fabric going up I thought how can I use it and make it worth while. so as I am sewing my way through the studio with clothing, I am going to also be using up my scraps and writing about it. It has given me new enthusiasm to write and I don't have to finish a big project to show you my ideas. My little green tunic top on the last blog was the first where I used scraps of fabric to make the rosettes around the bottom. The photo below is of by-product from another quilt I did years ago. They are triangles with reproduction fabrics and white on whites. They are on the flannel wall, I am tired of looking at them so I have set out to sew them up. I have set up an extra sewing machine so I can sew on two projects at a time...that way if I feel stumped with one I can just sit at another machine and work on another...or a garment. (It all has to do with thread color and machine set up) Stay tuned for ideas and pictures of how I use them up. I feel better already getting this going! I have a list of ideas to share.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjp6M7sIt-skFYNWt07aN0qvK_wthGSEs7d3CjOa_eP58rJUTwU7TLbTn6YzGZQxEtroMv6x9xgeRMAokrC2d8nkkh5sR_ZEbE2vwQ44GG_ZylHUEAoJreM_3_aZjd0z_uCuL9FIXQ7XI4/s400/tri+scraps.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5581573273570601026" />Darlene Veltman Design Studiohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06117319896939739196noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2021667887220306882.post-24658902159939770632010-07-25T19:18:00.001-07:002010-07-25T19:26:44.328-07:00Another new Top to show off<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi13Qx2z4M_rkrA737s7O4EGF16U2TnYa5Ij77jZxxPUl-v_UrTQ6IOe1Y-TLZgl8zmEWB6s07Kkq5-WA9gq9KCM-9Is-pMzv7VtoMs_0wsxVd_OR-Lam8iRGRPlyu982toW0Q3uqrCtt0/s320/DSCF7539.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5498035079047146114" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRfJKt9muPRdNi4FUW9kD6Frdr0g8xn2Vgg3nM3TI6g49CqNgmc09_SFzCjOnQVTNeZYHpaSH9Ybh3fYjEfFhaEEbbOYRRTGghL63XufDyqi_-wkViYajCnhu3edK9biqCS5Z_ksL4zh0/s320/DSCF7535.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5498033840257736194" />
So I thought I got this top out of my head but I didn't. I was playing with some scraps of vintage fabrics and a new book called "Fabrication" I liked some of her ideas for decorating garments or pillows and adapted this for my top. I cut circles of three different sizes and fabrics then sewed them on with a shell button. I washed the linen top to have the edges fray but it wasn't what I wanted, the fabric flowers stuck out. so I stitched them down with free motion quilting and ran that stitching to the next flower all the way around the bottom. This I liked. I just can't stop making these tops. I have another one on the drawing board!
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZmpVX4z4Cx_-7tvAHbcKFaDle_AQ0LYxGUz8mqVPFZtLSwrHJKmPQUACT1PsT0pFrx6EzcD4-nupxLJI0HB9Y_b5lpkSFTRvKP4w-c2u329fB-7UvDdsW9hzTlMOr6GEOlqFD_Op5pEI/s320/DSCF7541.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5498035640257885074" />Darlene Veltman Design Studiohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06117319896939739196noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2021667887220306882.post-57886686017212090432010-06-04T17:43:00.000-07:002010-06-04T19:54:49.852-07:00Menucha Spring 2010<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFODnO2DWgQAWaOBMaaHcr-YAfJ0Xzztud9JMZ78655MfjYlg30Yw20_HswmDGPZnngN8n3iDcoFjIG5lrxpgXH6GSYeeWZ9emULkysZ5GFxeGTo0JMAjF7wH5h2HNDl5sIf6z3kKW9t8/s320/artwork.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5479116666034815730" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-yPznr4Cu0j3BbkPDaoCWGzP5sFBWwBHneKgPjMwrGlISl8IZSFE7XGj1oh5u6-DR9gnsUPUw6q8Pqr8sDdbqyryFskGpR1G6Chq2-sPhHOudWZ_BbaN029gYlkujfQczejk2UbWbgrI/s320/roddie+pink.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5479116594881174642" />
The weekend before I left for Hong Kong I went to Menucha with my PAC sisters. It was another fun, inspirational, wild laughter of a time! These gals are the best. We started friday afternoon and didn't stop till sunday afternoon. I had to leave a bit early to get ready for my trip but these gals create with a passion. My table mate Debbie has some wonderful samples of work she did in a Traci Bautista class she took. I was so inspired I worked on a few pieces myself. I embroidered on an old Jean skirt I have been working on, we ate, laughed, told stories and just had a wonderful weekend despite the rain.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSn9ITXvBDlQWVe024RT1h8exZTE0IdS6hwJcOgNwGXt6H_zGOfmCpyT8sWD-ts7NN_rdm5X3vt_3b4N3i2EiOlwwGQ-cAqDGMd0E4a_Wx8S2IMLZb98WH7dOgsXm_SlndFF2fqsUhKnc/s320/greenhouse.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5479116088323389458" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidvG4y4fhf0ZOi6IJq3hmc2B-DP4PchnkHbGwB6Oqe4Qw9bbSTceZcsWXJ81w3FzCgiv1LF-ouKAGEIGQOVCSIE36Wz-QvZxaiGMy2cWGnBgePrpetKxyUAw9RiAtHAwtpAkRwnUnwoJw/s320/slippers.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5479116873828997058" />Darlene Veltman Design Studiohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06117319896939739196noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2021667887220306882.post-57519234647129802302010-04-25T13:06:00.001-07:002010-04-25T13:27:17.899-07:00Inspiration Day in Hood RiverYesterday, my quilting buddies, Sue and Gail, and I drove out to Hood River to go to the Columbia Center for the Arts. It is hosting a wonderful show featuring some local Fiber Artists. Fiber Arts Now is the show and is up till May 2. Wonderful show. As we looked over the show Hilde Morin, one of the artists was there taking a class from Trisha Hassler, another fabulous fiber artist in the show. I was so glad to meet Tirsha and hope to take one of her classes myself. Her juxtaposition of fabric and metal are incredible. The felt work in the show was wonderful as well, Laura Berman and Pat Sparks.
it was a fun day walking around Hood River. Yarn shopping, Bead shopping and quilt shopping all in town as well as other fun home stores. We were all inspired. I came home, popped in Julie/Julia and worked on my purse panels.<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyjCwrYpRJN1Bd1hI3BRtdaXcQCH57C_O7Z_6dqm5iIXYSCsZ9Ko9I2mqOcqKaXtfD0TAKyAWkXl9HhhRFLWHNqspF_yRLtr3LBpyrsHC5q5iCS9M-sbRp8rLXJP38OnOpQeFT6VnVD_k/s320/purse1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5464171603993949474" /> I like the way it is coming out.<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUqtOvUwNhyphenhyphenQWv-KSWn1OuxtGUDlnngHgbeJ_W9B_DcSHDQtC7fksGPNGzUGxjs160iTMSRGXMbFfNl3zkLs2Jf2eKgkdLp6B8F0uYrlNRobpBB7JJa2tyRm1zKaNzcyQM5btDALQVUjw/s320/purse2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5464171717399741890" />
Today I am cleaning the studio and getting ready to long arm an old quilt I just want to get done. I have made two new tops from an old pattern I re-fit. It is from almost 15 years ago when I was working in San Francisco. As I was cleaning out a few boxes of old clothes I found a great black with white polka dot top I made from the pattern when my daughter was born. This little black top looks great( I think) with my cuff jeans and Keen Mary Jane’s. It was just a little tight in the sleeve hem…easy fix with a small gusset. It was such a great piece of fabric it still holds up today. I realized with this project of “sewing my way through the studio” is that I still like the look of some of my old patterns, I just need to update the fit. I need to be fashionable for work but still comfortable. So I dug out some old rayon yardage I had from 8 years ago. The pieces again both hold up to the today’s fashions and my desire to look like an artist without looking like a short fat middle aged woman trying to look hip!. One in a taupe brown with black writing. Words like Create, Inspire, Play, Learn…..I still really liked it so I put together a top with black velvet piping around the neck and black velvet covered buttons. All stuff from my stash. I also added a small gusset in the under arm and that fixed the tight sleeve…Well I am loving it. So I made another one. <img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 198px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrbEe9IyJ8kloz60e8TjxdexT1cLg3vytzArXzCvLJybWNDs7hj6BeWe5NSyLqGr0wb4q4Lpd-lWglsMkLzKhFB_inWFxGdBublSR4AJEjT51TrbEuPQyHc8T73MlfV4PFEaWpAnXTTIM/s320/dress2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5458936758332593090" />This one in a purplish/blue batik. I had two fabric pieces that match in colorway. I put a collar on this one…I decided I like the collar better than collar- less version. I found some vintage buttons in my stash that go pretty well. I just bought thread so the topstitching looked good. I love the cool feeling of the soft rayon and the comfortable fit. I think I will call the pattern “Lovin’ it top”. I kind of like the look of a doll, with the mary jane straps, short cuff pants and big gathered top. Just need a flower in my hair! I think I can pull it off. My look is the same but more creative then 30 years ago. I think it can still work for me.
Next I am going to make some Linen Stripe pants and tops to match. I need to work on my vest patterns to dress up some of my outfits. Belted at the waist, palazzo pants out of rayon or linen….stay tuned.Darlene Veltman Design Studiohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06117319896939739196noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2021667887220306882.post-609159820632878112010-02-20T17:01:00.000-08:002010-02-20T17:06:59.063-08:00Quilters In Motion FlagMy Quilt group, Quilters in Motion, participated in a flag exchange this month. She took me to a lovely place in NE Portland called Spa Willamina. It is in a cute little house that is warm and comfortable. Check out their monthly specials. We each had a Honey Chocolate Facial and a Cocoa-Butter Massage. It was a very relaxing evening. Check them out.Darlene Veltman Design Studiohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06117319896939739196noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2021667887220306882.post-19762339333050398722010-01-31T16:03:00.000-08:002010-01-31T16:23:50.997-08:00Studio Re-org for the new year<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvhWa27WA2N1Unht7DMe-pq7QOHd3x5MdJTY2IRB1qSRk0hLaI0UciyTMfiXopE1oC7qV4gCcgvwk-OyfsFjEsjcTvhdcUFwlr66oEnIVzg9Ht7kR0szRm0NDbIpSxzY2pjSFfYWv6xu8/s320/stacked+up.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5433062533927896482" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHxttbQAhfprdHd0NRuuKlHMDmzgWo6Ec3CpRdvJ1KCCaTrkHB3rtzGs-HVxutXT6EyWt_Xi9vKnS88eV9i6snriMvMUY0HiBoiggiZTdoibUZMU9lksKViz1eWI9kLNMt0xDGZN6jrTI/s320/fab+reorg2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5433062163228072210" />
I watched Julie/Julia right after the first of the year and I loved it. While away on a business trip I got to thinking about all the fabric and patterns I have been collecting over the years and how I need new clothes so bad! I thought why not sew my way through the studio! So I came home and tore up my fabric stash...it was a hassle but good because I found a bunch of stuff I don't want anymore and can get rid of....so maybe etsy. Anyway my daughter came down and said "What the Heck?!?!!?" So she grabbed my camera and took some pictures of me. She thought she would come down and see me buried under rubbermaid boxes I had them stacked so high!<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZU52TxNeOshIVwX_68J8_wjoiKUJ6-NO4CRmSdkkjnDKYeHA98kVWVBjjnazKUGNgV12NQ-efjcjZDiebHuVq7zy8NzlJJElbpV7dIXrdUcbA162Hdzh7KvEMo0jpzIHCT79SdehN_-o/s320/fab+reorg1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5433062061172999794" /> So heres my deal. I took out all the nice fabric I still like and stacked it up so I can get to it. I will only use fabric and patterns I already have. I will do a fitting on my dress form if need be. I want to perfect a few patterns like vest, pant and skirt. I want to try some embellishing as well so not just plain stuff...put some "ART" into them. I am off to a good start working on a pattern for a jacket out of green corduroy. I will post once I get done. I will also have a quilt going on the wall so I get the best of both worlds. I have a new full time job starting this week so I will have to fit it into the schedule but know it will be a good thing for me to relax and do at the end of the day. I have such great tools and so this will give me the challenge to use them. So here's to it...I will check in about it again soon.Darlene Veltman Design Studiohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06117319896939739196noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2021667887220306882.post-21108051959131454922009-12-27T08:23:00.001-08:002009-12-27T08:37:59.061-08:00Goodwill find!<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHKq08mHZ0j9eCQt8Qiysvji9s04cgrPZLpQLlXguA7CBzl0I6pwdtyAGe4QSE7OlOTxNz6vcCbwZ45VT_MLif4clGBaWXfh0qiOIV9V_nnTur_GmPiXqiaDCgIEN7TZ5VkM2P-m-FOBU/s320/emb+trd2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5419952510000332338" />
Look at what I found at Goodwill yesterday! I saw a lady pick it up and I thought is that really a whole box of embroidery floss!?!?!?! She put it down and I casually moved over to that part of the shelf and grabbed it! It was like finding a pot of gold! I have been trying to use up the items in my studio but just had to do a little looking around yesterday and it came up good with this. I have a box filled with embroidery floss already but love finding things like this. Thanks to Mary Ann's class I have new means for more stuff! My daughter is into going anytime so I can tell we will go again this week while on winter break.Darlene Veltman Design Studiohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06117319896939739196noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2021667887220306882.post-27101999906688774262009-12-27T08:10:00.000-08:002009-12-27T08:20:01.107-08:00New Journal for 2010I have been taking an online class with Mary Ann Moss. She is fabulous and I am having a fun time creating my new Remains of the Day Journal for 2010. We created a fabric cover and then paper pages with lots of goodies sewn on them for pockets, and decoration.
